SAN JOSE, CA.

Tax season is about to begin, and one option for filing your return is to have an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).

Tax season will start on January 29, and those using an ITIN number could receive refunds.

Obtaining an ITIN number is an option for taxpayers who do not have a Social Security number and wish to file their tax return.

Each case is different, so consulting with tax professionals for personalized information about the process is recommended.

An informative and free workshop about ITIN will be held in San Francisco.

This Tuesday, January 16. MEDA will host a free seminar from 4 to 6 p.m.

The event will occur at the Women’s Building, 3542 18th Street in San Francisco.

The ITIN number helps with filing tax returns.

Although each case is different, and although not everyone can regularize their immigration status in the same way, several tax professionals recommend obtaining an ITIN number if you have income in order to file tax returns.

Jesus Flores, a tax professional, explains that anyone who needs to file a return and does not have a Social Security number can obtain an ITIN number.

However, if the taxpayer already has a Social Security number, they do not need the ITIN number.

How long should one wait to file taxes if they've just arrived in the United States?

Flores also emphasizes that it's essential for immigrants who have just arrived in the country to have been here for at least six months during the fiscal year to file their tax returns.

Dairo Romero from the MEDA Organization points out that there are also essential recommendations for immigrants who enter the country with political asylum.

If they are close to obtaining a Social Security number, it is better to wait and file taxes with that number.

How do I apply for an ITIN number?

The ITIN number is assigned by the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) so that individuals can declare their income.

To apply for it, you need to complete Form W7.

If taxpayers decide to handle the process themselves, they may have to submit their original passport as one of the requirements.

However, some non-profit organizations like MEDA can assist without requiring the submission of the original document.

In summary, tax season will start on January 29, and those using an ITIN number could receive refunds.

How much should I apply for?

If you must file a tax or informational return, you can use your ITIN any time during the year. At a minimum, you must complete Form W-7 (SP) when you are ready to file your federal income tax return by the prescribed due date. You may owe interest and penalties if the tax return attached to your Form W-7 (SP) is filed after the due date..
